Apetamin Craze in Nigeria
There has been an increasing demand for a syrup called Apetamin, mostly by skinny girls (some skinny guys too). This has made this drug seem to be like diamond. The demand is obviously greater than the supply, so prices has gone up from #1500 to about #4000. Really what is the big deal about Apetamin? Is it good to take it for weight gain?
Truth is, the major constituent of Apetamin syrup is Cyproheptadine, an anti-histamin, its side effects includes heightened appetite, thus making it useful in the treatment of anorexia.
The drug is actually an anti-allergic drug, primarily used to relieve: Hives, itching, runny nose, watery eyes, etc.
The side effects of this drug has prompted many people to misuse Apetamin for cosmetic purposes- targeted weight gain.
Can this misuse be dangerous to your health?
Yes it can! Abuse of Apetamin syrup can predispose the user to obesity. Some people have been known to record sleep disturbances after they abruptly stopped the use of Apetamin.
It is important to note that Apetamin is just a brand name, the major constituent is Cyproheptadine, other companies have their brand names with which they market the drug (like cyprigold and Cyprivit).
Some drugs are known to interact with this drugs, especially the mono anime oxidase inhibitors. It is also contraindicated in people who have an allergic reaction to it, women who are breast-feeding, a newborn baby or premature infant, an elderly person, those who have narrow-angle glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, a peptic ulcer, etc. Always consult your pharmacist or Doctor when taking any medication.
