Are all drugs unsafe and toxic on expiration date? Get answers

What expiry dates really mean

When a drug expiration date is met, does it mean that the drug would just become completely bad? Like a poison? Or does it even get toxic 2/3 months before its expiration? Or rather, does it have some days of "grace"after its expiration? Well, let us find out.
Meaning of expiration date

A huge part of the integrity of the drug is being affected by "storage". When a drug is not properly stored, it can get bad (ineffective) even before its expiration date. That is why every drug has its storage condition. Some prefer very cold temperatures to be remain viable and active, while others would remain viable under room temperature.
However, these questions posed above are important questions to be dealt with. The manufacturing companies are mandated to put expiration dates on the drugs, this shows the expected shelf life of the drug by the companies but not the actual shelf life. In a study by the Food and Drug Administration on request of the American Military, it was shown that 90% of drugs tested were still effective after expiration dates have passed.
However, there were few exceptions to this theory, which are drugs like insulin, liquid antibiotics, tetracycline and nitroglycerin as seen in the same study.
So we can rightly say that expiration dates are put by manufacturers to guarantee you 100% of your product.
Next time you are handed a near expiration drug or a drug that just expired, I'll employ you to consider what you have just read. If you are still in doubt, refer to your pharmacist for clarification.
